The challenge

What was the challenge?

A hardware supplier with 40,000 SKUs had to leave an end-of-life Magento 1 build. Layered navigation was producing hundreds of thousands of crawlable filter URLs, Google was indexing thin combinations, and the team was nervous after hearing about migrations that lost half their traffic.

The strategy

What was the strategy?

  1. 01

Treat the migration as an SEO project from the first sprint

  2. 02

Control which filter combinations Google may crawl

  3. 03

Strengthen top categories once the new site was stable

The playbook

What exactly was done?

3 moves, each with what was done and why it mattered.

  1. 01Migration

Mapped and tested every important URL

Built a redirect map for 40,000 product and category URLs, tested it on staging with crawls, and launched outside the store's peak trading weeks.

Why it mattered: Most migration losses come from missed redirects and changed templates. Testing before launch kept traffic within normal range in the first eight weeks.

  2. 02Technical SEO

    Brought layered navigation under control

Allowed a short list of valuable filters, such as brand and material, to be indexed, and blocked the rest from crawling.

Why it mattered: Crawl moved from endless filter combinations to products and categories that could actually sell, and indexing of new SKUs sped up.

  3. 03Content

Wrote category guidance with the sales team

Added selection advice, specifications, standards and delivery details to the 60 categories with the highest margin.

Why it mattered: Trade buyers compare specifications before ordering. Useful guidance moved these categories from page two to the top five.

The principles

What do I stand for?

  • Migrations are SEO projects

Rankings are decided by decisions made months before launch.

  • Crawl only what can sell

Filters are indexed only where real people search for them.
