What was the challenge?
A licensed pharmacy chain with 11 branches had launched an online store with 6,000 products, but nearly all of its search traffic came from its brand name. Product pages used manufacturer copy shared with every other retailer, prescription items were indexed alongside over-the-counter ones, and category pages took over five seconds to load on mobile.
What was the strategy?
- 01
Rebuild categories around how people search: by need, brand and age group
- 02
Give products unique, pharmacist-reviewed content and full product schema
- 03
Keep prescription medicines out of search and make the site fast on mobile
What exactly was done?
4 moves, each with what was done and why it mattered.
- 01Site structure
Rebuilt the category tree
Reorganised 6,000 SKUs into categories shoppers search for, such as "vitamin D supplements", "baby formula" and "sunscreen for kids", with brand and age filters that do not create indexable duplicates.
Why it mattered: Category searches carry more volume than single products and are where Amazon.ae and noon usually win. Clean categories with real buying guidance gave the pharmacy a page worth ranking for each one.
- 02Content
Pharmacist-reviewed guides for top categories
Wrote short buying guides for the top 40 categories, covering dosage forms, who a product suits and when to see a doctor, each signed off by the chain's lead pharmacist.
Why it mattered: Health purchases fall under Google's strictest quality standard. A named pharmacist reviewer is the trust signal that lets a retailer rank for health products against big marketplaces.
- 03Technical SEO
Product schema, speed and prescription controls
Added Product, Offer and availability schema to every SKU, set prescription-only items to noindex in line with UAE rules, and cut mobile category load time from 5.2 to 1.9 seconds.
Why it mattered: Rich results with price and stock lift click-through, while keeping prescription items out of search protects the licence. Speed matters most on mobile, where over 80% of orders were placed.
- 04Local + online
Linked the 11 branches to the store
Optimised each branch's Business Profile with delivery areas and a link to the online store, and added "pharmacy near me open 24 hours" pages for the three 24-hour branches.
Why it mattered: Many shoppers search locally first. Connecting branches to the store turned local searches into delivery orders as well as walk-ins.
What do I stand for?
Compliance first, then growth
Prescription medicines never get promoted in search. Everything else is optimised hard, inside the rules.
Categories win markets
A pharmacy cannot outspend marketplaces on product ads, but it can own the categories with better guidance.
