Key takeaways
- Google handled 93.47% of United Arab Emirates (UAE) search referrals in September 2026, according to StatCounter.
- Bing is a desktop channel in the UAE: StatCounter recorded 10.97% of desktop searches but 0.34% of mobile searches in September 2026.
- 70.1% of working-age UAE residents used generative AI in Q1 2026 (Microsoft), yet AI chatbots sent only 0.43% of tracked UAE referrals in September 2026 (StatCounter).
- No public dataset splits UAE searches by Arabic and English, so your own Google Search Console (GSC) data is the only reliable answer.
UAE search behavior is the pattern of how people in the United Arab Emirates look for information online. It covers which search engines and devices they use, which languages they search in, and where search sits next to social apps and AI chatbots. In September 2026, Google handled 93.47% of UAE search referrals and mobile devices carried 60.04% of UAE web traffic, according to StatCounter.
Most guides on UAE search behavior stop at those two numbers. The parts that change a marketing plan sit underneath. A desktop audience still uses Bing, and no public data splits searches by language. The UAE also pairs the world's highest AI adoption with tiny AI referral volumes.
What does UAE search behavior look like in 2026?
In 2026, UAE search behavior is led by Google and by mobile phones, and people search in both Arabic and English. AI tools are used widely but send few visits. Search engines still produce most website referrals, while social platforms and WhatsApp handle much of the discovery and conversation around a purchase.
| Measure | Figure | Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

| Internet penetration | 99.0% | Oct 2025 | DataReportal |
| Search share of all referrals | 85.97% | Sep 2026 | StatCounter |
| AI chatbot share of all referrals | 0.43% | Sep 2026 | StatCounter |
| Working-age adults using generative AI | 70.1% | Q1 2026 | Microsoft |
| Adults comparing prices on Google monthly | 94% | Mar 2025 | Public First, for Google |
Each figure is linked to its source in the section that discusses it.
Almost everyone in the UAE is reachable online. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counted 11.3 million internet users in the UAE in October 2025, a penetration rate of 99.0%, which is the publisher's cap. DataReportal put the median age at 31.6 at the end of 2025, and 63.7% of the population was male. Growth in the UAE comes from taking share, not from reaching new users.
Which search engines do people in the UAE actually use?
Google handles almost every search in the UAE. It held 93.47% of search referrals in the UAE in September 2026, with Bing second at 3.96% and Yandex third at 1.8%, according to StatCounter. That headline hides the device split in UAE search behavior.
| Platform | Bing | Yandex | |
|---|---|---|---|
| All platforms | 93.47% | 3.96% | 1.8% |
| Desktop | 86.5% | 10.97% | 1.11% |
| Mobile | 97.07% | 0.34% | 2.15% |

In StatCounter's September 2026 figures, Bing's desktop share in the UAE is about 32 times its mobile share. My read is that Bing's desktop users are a work-computer audience: people researching suppliers, software and services during office hours. That is the buyer most business-to-business (B2B) companies want.
Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, then split your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) traffic by device and source. If Bing desktop visits convert well, they deserve their own keyword review.
How much of UAE search happens on mobile?
Most UAE search happens on mobile. Mobile devices carried 60.04% of UAE web traffic in September 2026, against 38.91% for desktop and 1.05% for tablets, according to StatCounter. These figures count page views on sites StatCounter tracks, not searches. Treat them as a strong signal for mobile search in the UAE, not an exact count.
The UAE mobile network is not the bottleneck. Ookla data in DataReportal's Digital 2026 report put the median UAE mobile download speed at 614.42 Mbps at the end of 2025. That speed was up 54.2% in the twelve months to August 2025.
Mobile-first does not mean mobile-only. In StatCounter's September 2026 data, almost four in ten UAE page views still came from desktops, where the Bing audience sits.
Do people in the UAE search in Arabic or English?
People in the UAE search in both Arabic and English. According to the UAE Government fact sheet, Arabic is the official language, and all road, traffic and commercial signs are in Arabic and English. The same fact sheet notes that the expatriate community outnumbers UAE nationals. No public dataset measures the Arabic versus English share of UAE Google searches.
Many UAE marketing articles fill the missing language data with numbers that have no source. Check any figure against this list before it goes into a board deck.
| Claim you will see | What the primary data shows |
|---|---|
| “65% of Arabic searches in the UAE are voice searches” | No source is cited. No verified UAE voice-search split by language exists. |
| “UAE mobile usage is higher than the UK and Europe” | Usually stated without figures. The UAE figure is 60.04% of web traffic (Sep 2026). |
| “Zero-click searches are common in the UAE” | No UAE measurement exists. The best click data comes from the US. |
Primary data: StatCounter (September 2026) and Pew Research Center (US, March 2025), both linked in this article.
One verified signal points to strong Arabic demand for AI tools. In a March 2025 Public First survey commissioned by Google, 71% of UAE Gemini users said Gemini is easier to use in Arabic than other AI chatbots (PDF).
The only reliable language split is your own, and the checklist at the end of this article shows how to find it. If your data shows real Arabic demand, my guide to bilingual SEO for Arabic and English sites covers how Google reads each version and how to connect them.
Where does search sit next to social, WhatsApp and AI chatbots?
Search still sends the visit in the UAE, even though UAE digital consumers lead the world in AI use. Search engines produced 85.97% of tracked referrals in the UAE in September 2026, according to StatCounter, against 13.6% for social platforms and 0.43% for AI chatbots.
According to Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report (PDF), 70.1% of the UAE's working-age population used a generative AI product in Q1 2026, the highest rate in the world.
| Signal | Figure | What it means for your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Generative AI use, ages 15 to 64 | 70.1% (Q1 2026) | Buyers form opinions inside AI tools |
| AI chatbot share of referrals | 0.43% (Sep 2026) | AI tools rarely send the visit yet |
| Search share of referrals | 85.97% (Sep 2026) | Search still delivers the click |
| Social as main brand-research tool | 48.1% (2026) | Discovery and proof happen in feeds |
| WhatsApp use | 80%+ of population (2026) | The conversation moves to chat |
Sources: Microsoft (Q1 2026), StatCounter (September 2026) and We Are Social via Campaign Middle East (2026).
ChatGPT is the most used AI chatbot in the UAE. It took 80.99% of UAE AI-chatbot traffic in September 2026, with Google Gemini second at 13.25%, according to StatCounter.
Social platforms carry weight in the UAE too. We Are Social's 2026 UAE report found that 48.1% of UAE internet users treat social networks as their primary brand-research tool, as reported by Campaign Middle East. The same report found that more than 80% of the population is active on WhatsApp.

How do UAE consumers use Google before they buy?
UAE consumers use Google to compare prices, then check reviews and maps before they visit a business. In a March 2025 Public First survey of 1,110 online adults, commissioned by Google, 94% of UAE adults said they use Google Search at least monthly to compare prices.
Google usage in the UAE goes well beyond typing a query. In the same 2025 survey, 86% said they check Google reviews before visiting a business at least once a month. The survey also found that 80% use Google Maps or Waze monthly to find a local business.
Because Google commissioned the Public First study, read it as a strong signal rather than independent proof. It still describes a market where reviews and the map pin often decide the visit before the website does. My guide to local SEO in Dubai covers how Google ranks those map results.
The website still matters, but in the UAE the sale often closes somewhere else. One of my clients, a Dubai gold and jewelry retailer, was attracting browsers rather than buyers. I rebuilt the site around buying-intent searches, published mid- and bottom-of-funnel content linked to priority product pages, and earned links from UAE investment sites.
From February to July 2025, the retailer's organic traffic grew 93%, from 4.7K to 9.3K visits, verified in Google Search Console. Conversions through forms, WhatsApp and phone calls rose fourfold. If your tracking only counts form fills, a UAE search campaign can look weaker than it is. The details are in my Dubai gold business SEO case study.
When does UAE search demand shift during the year?
Ramadan is the largest yearly shift in UAE search demand. According to Think with Google, Ramadan 2023 produced the highest-ever peak in Google searches across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Google's 2023 data, the most recent it has published, counted 193 million Ramadan-specific searches across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Think with Google reported 7.2 billion general searches across the same three markets during Ramadan 2023, up 21% on Ramadan 2022.
Demand inside Ramadan is uneven. Microsoft Advertising and InMobi, which sell search advertising, found that travel and tourism searches in the UAE stayed stable or rose during the middle of Ramadan 2025. As Jacob Joseph, Director of Sales for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa at InMobi Advertising, put it: “Ramadan demand does not follow a linear curve.”
Plan Ramadan content and budgets week by week. My Ramadan SEO guide for the UAE covers when to publish and what to build.
Outside Ramadan, sport and technology drive the spikes in UAE search. Google's Year in Search for 2025 showed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and the Asia Cup leading UAE sports searches. Google Gemini, DeepSeek and ChatGPT were among the most searched terms in the UAE that year. Marwa Khost, Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Google MENA, wrote that “the year was truly defined by a tech-savvy population.”
How is AI search changing UAE search behavior?
Google AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries that appear above the regular results, now show in Arabic and English in the UAE. As of 18 October 2026, Google's AI Overviews help page lists both the United Arab Emirates and Arabic as supported. Google also began rolling out AI Mode in Modern Standard Arabic on 8 October 2025.
Google said in October 2025 that early AI Mode users asked questions two to three times the length of traditional searches. Google's Search Central documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a technique called query fan-out: they split one question into subtopics and run many related searches at once. A page that answers one specific question clearly gives AI Mode something to retrieve.
No UAE study measures clicks on AI answers, so the best evidence comes from a US study by Pew Research Center. Pew found that Google visits with an AI summary led to a click on a regular result 8% of the time in March 2025, against 15% without a summary. In the same Pew study, only 1% of those visits clicked a link inside the summary. Treat these US figures as a direction for the UAE, not a measurement.
A search that ends without a click is called a zero-click search: the searcher gets an answer and never visits a site. Two disciplines respond to zero-click search.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a page so an AI system can lift a direct answer from it. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping content, entities and authority so generative AI tools cite your brand. In the UAE, both now apply in Arabic as well as English, and both are the focus of my AEO and GEO consulting in Dubai.
What should marketers in the UAE do with this data?
Start with your own numbers, because national data on UAE search behavior only tells you where to look. When I audit a UAE site for search engine optimization (SEO), I run seven checks first. All seven use Google Search Console (GSC) and Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
- Compare devices. In GSC, filter the country to the UAE and compare mobile and desktop clicks.
- Find Arabic demand. Filter queries for Arabic script, and look for Arabic words typed in Latin letters.
- Check translated results. In GSC's Search Appearance filter, look for impressions from translated results.
- Measure Bing. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and segment GA4 by source and device.
- Track AI referrals. Build a GA4 segment for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Count every inquiry. Record WhatsApp and call clicks as GA4 events, not only form fills.
- Plan around Ramadan. Build seasonal pages and content before the month starts.
National search data only pays off when it changes your plan. When I build an SEO strategy in Dubai, I start with how your own buyers search. I look at your device split in Search Console, the Arabic and English queries that convert, your desktop traffic from Bing, and the WhatsApp and call inquiries most reports miss.
The strategy becomes a 12-month roadmap with owners and dates, covering Google rankings and the AI answers your buyers now read first. If your UAE traffic looks healthy but inquiries do not, that gap is usually where I start.
Frequently asked questions
What search engine do most people in the UAE use?
Most people in the UAE use Google: StatCounter recorded it at 93.47% of UAE search referrals in September 2026, with Bing second at 3.96% and Yandex third at 1.8%. On desktop, Google's share falls to 86.5% and Bing's rises to 10.97%, so B2B sites should not ignore Bing.
Is Bing worth optimizing for in the UAE?
For B2B companies in the UAE, Bing is usually worth it: StatCounter recorded Bing at 10.97% of UAE desktop searches in September 2026 but only 0.34% of mobile searches. If your buyers research from office computers, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check how Bing desktop visitors convert in GA4.
Do people in the UAE search in Arabic or English?
People in the UAE search in both, since Arabic is the official language and commercial signs use Arabic and English, but no public dataset splits UAE Google searches by language. To measure your own split, filter Google Search Console queries for Arabic script and compare clicks and conversions by language.
Which AI chatbot do people in the UAE use most?
ChatGPT is the most used AI chatbot in the UAE, with 80.99% of UAE AI-chatbot traffic in September 2026 against 13.25% for Google Gemini, according to StatCounter. AI chatbots overall sent only 0.43% of tracked UAE referrals that month, so they shape decisions far more than they send website visits.
Are Google AI Overviews available in Arabic in the UAE?
Yes: as of 18 October 2026, Google's help page lists both the United Arab Emirates and Arabic for AI Overviews. Google also began rolling out AI Mode in Modern Standard Arabic on 8 October 2025, so Arabic pages now compete for AI answers as well as regular rankings.
