Hire an SEO Consultant in Dubai: 12 Questions to Ask

Key takeaways
- Google publishes its own checklist for hiring an SEO. Start every interview there.
- Ask to see results inside Google Search Console, not screenshots of rankings.
- Test every AI search claim against Google's guide to generative AI features, last updated July 10, 2026.
- Keep owner access to Google Search Console and your Google Business Profile in your own name.
If you plan to hire an SEO consultant in Dubai, ask questions that make the answers checkable, then score each answer. The 12 below cover proof, method, AI search claims and account ownership.
What should you check before you hire an SEO consultant in Dubai?
Check four things: whether the results are real, whether the method is safe, whether the AI search claims hold up, and whether you keep control of your accounts. A search engine optimization (SEO) consultant is a specialist who audits your search performance, sets the plan, and either does the work or directs your team.
Google's guide to hiring an SEO lists interview questions, warning signs and the access you should give. Google last updated it on June 5, 2026, and almost nobody selling SEO in Dubai cites it.
The questions below build on Google's list, and they work just as well as questions to ask an SEO agency.
Which questions test an SEO consultant's track record?
Four questions test the track record: who does the work, Search Console proof, a recent reference, and experience in your industry and the UAE. Ask these first, because they separate people who did the work from people who resell it.
1. Who exactly will do the work?
With a solo consultant the answer should be “me”, plus any named specialists they bring in. With an agency, ask to meet the person who will run your account before you sign. If you are still choosing between the two models, my SEO consultant vs agency comparison sets out the trade-offs.
2. Can you show me a result inside Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is Google's tool that shows how a site performs in Search. A screenshot of one ranking proves little. A dated Search Console chart, with the change behind it explained, proves a lot.
A Dubai gold and jewelry retailer came to me with steady visitors and few buyers, because almost no pages were built for someone ready to purchase. I moved the work to buying-intent pages, pointed internal links at them, and earned links from relevant UAE investment sites.
Within six months, the retailer's organic traffic went from 4.7K to 9.3K visits, and inquiries through forms, WhatsApp and calls quadrupled. The Dubai retail SEO case study sets out the Search Console figures.
3. Can I speak to a client from the last 12 months?
Google's hiring guide tells buyers to check business references and to ask past clients whether the work was useful and produced results. A reference from five years ago describes a different market.
4. What is your experience in my industry and in the UAE?
Google's own interview list asks about both your industry and your country or city. In the UAE, a strong answer covers Arabic and English content, Google Business Profile (GBP) listings for each branch, and inquiries that arrive through WhatsApp.
Google still carries most UAE search demand, as my roundup of SEO stats for the UAE shows. StatCounter, which measures page views, put Google at 93.47% of UAE search engine share in September 2026, against 3.96% for Bing.
| Question | A strong answer | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Who does the work | Names the people and their roles | “Our team”, with no names |
| 2. Search Console proof | A dated chart, with the cause explained | Only ranking screenshots |
| 3. Recent reference | A client you can call this week | Not one contactable reference |
| 4. Industry and UAE | Talks about your buyers, language and channels | Generic results from other markets |
Which questions reveal how the work will be done?
Four questions expose the method before money moves: what will change and by when, where links will come from, whether you see every change, and which advice comes from Google. Vague answers here usually mean the plan is a template.
5. What will change, by when, and how will we measure it?
Google lists this question in its own hiring guide. A good answer names the first month's fixes, the measures you will see later, and the business result behind them, such as calls, bookings or WhatsApp inquiries. A date for a #1 ranking is not an answer.
Rankings also move with Google's confirmed ranking updates, which nobody controls, so compare the dates against my SEO updates tracker for Google and Bing before you blame anyone.
6. Where will the links and mentions come from?
Google's spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. As of the August 28, 2026 update, the same policies also treat attempts to manipulate generative AI responses as spam.
Ask for named examples of links earned for past clients, because “we have a network” is not an answer. Google's hiring guide adds a simpler rule: you should never have to link to an SEO.
7. Will you show me every change you make to my site?
Google's hiring guide warns against SEOs who are secretive or will not explain what they plan to do. The same guide says you are responsible for the actions of anyone you hire, so ask for a change log: what changed, on which page, on which date, and why.
8. Which recommendations come from Google, and which from your own testing?
Google's guidance on third-party SEO advice says good advice either labels its claims as opinion based on data or experience, or cites official Google guidance. Both are acceptable.
The problem is advice with no stated basis at all. A consultant who says “this comes from my own testing, and here is what I saw” is more honest than one who says “Google wants this” and cannot show where.
| Question | A strong answer | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|
| 5. Change, timing, measure | Month-one deliverables tied to inquiries | A ranking promised by a date |
| 6. Links and mentions | Named examples and how they were earned | “We have a network” |
| 7. Change log | Every change, page and date, shared | “It's our proprietary method” |
| 8. Google or testing | Says which is which, with sources | “Google wants this”, no link |
What should you ask an SEO consultant about AI search?
Ask how they approach AI search and what they cannot measure. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of shaping pages so an AI tool can lift a direct answer from them. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers, such as Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT.
Google's guide to generative AI features says that, from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for those features is still SEO.
9. How do you approach AEO and GEO, and which GEO do you mean?
In 2026, “GEO” is also used for geographic or local SEO, as I explain in my guide to what Generative Engine Optimization actually involves. Ask which one is in the proposal.
Then test the tactics. Google's guide, updated July 10, 2026, lists several things you can ignore for Google Search.
| What you might be sold | What Google's guide says | Ask instead |
|---|---|---|
| An llms.txt file to rank in AI Overviews | Google Search ignores it, so it neither helps nor harms | Which non-Google systems is it for? |
| “Chunking” pages for AI | There is no requirement to split content up | What makes the page more useful to buyers? |
| Rewriting content just for AI | Not needed; AI systems understand synonyms and meaning | Which pages are thin, and why? |
| Bought or arranged brand mentions | Inauthentic mentions help less than they seem | Where will genuine coverage come from? |
| Special schema markup for AI | Structured data is not required for AI features | Which rich results is the markup for? |
Source: Google Search Central, guide to optimizing for generative AI features, updated July 10, 2026.
An llms.txt file is a text file some sites publish for AI systems. Having one is fine, and other services may read it. The red flag is selling it as a way to rank in Google's AI features.
10. How will you report AI visibility, and what can't you measure?
The honest answer has limits in it. Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and it reached all sites on August 31, 2026. Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows the visits AI assistants send you.
I report AI visibility this way myself. In my AI SEO case study, a new German business software site passed 100K generative AI impressions in Search Console and 2,000 organic clicks a month within three months. GA4 logged 200+ referral visits from ChatGPT and other assistants.
Several tactics ran at once, so I cannot isolate a single cause. A consultant who claims exact citation counts from Google is overclaiming.
Who owns your accounts, and what does the fee buy?
You should own your Google Search Console property, your Google Business Profile and your content, and know exactly what each dirham buys. Questions 11 and 12 protect you at two points: when the engagement ends, and when the invoice arrives.
11. Who will own Search Console, Google Business Profile and the content?
You should. Google recommends giving an SEO read-only access to Google Search Console at the audit stage. The catch most buyers miss is in Google's Search Console permissions guide: removing a verified owner does not delete their verification token. While that token stays on your site, the removed owner can re-verify and get back in.
Run this check every time you change provider:
- Open Search Console settings and list every owner and user.
- Check the ownership history for anyone you do not recognize.
- Remove unused ownership tokens for anyone who has left.
- Confirm that you are the primary owner of your Google Business Profile.
- Give new providers manager access, not ownership.
Google's Business Profile owners and managers guide says a profile has one primary owner, and that managers cannot add or remove users. New owners also wait 7 days before they can transfer primary ownership, so do not leave the handover to the last week.
12. What does the fee buy, and who am I contracting with?
Divide the monthly fee by a realistic senior hourly rate to see the hours you are buying. A few hours a month buys monitoring, not growth. I break down what SEO costs in Dubai line by line elsewhere.
Then check the paperwork. Ask which legal entity will invoice you and where it is licensed. Check whether Value Added Tax (VAT) is included in the quote, and whether the Tax Registration Number (TRN) appears on it. My guide to SEO consulting in Dubai covers the trade license and VAT checks step by step.
| Question | A strong answer | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|
| 11. Account ownership | You stay owner; they get read or manager access | Accounts set up in their name |
| 12. Fee and entity | Hours, scope and legal entity in writing | No entity or TRN on the quote |
Which SEO red flags should end the conversation?
The clearest SEO red flags are a guaranteed #1 ranking, a claimed special relationship with Google, a Partner badge offered as SEO proof, paid reviews and bought links. Most are written into Google's own documentation, so you do not need my word for them.
| Red flag | What Google's documentation says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A guaranteed #1 ranking | No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google | Hiring guide |
| A “special relationship” or “priority submit” | Treat both claims as warning signs | Hiring guide |
| A Google Partner badge offered as SEO proof | Partner badges relate to Google advertising, which has no effect on organic ranking | Google Ads advertiser guide |
| Paid or incentivized reviews | Reviews bought with money or perks are not allowed on Google Maps | Maps content policy |
| Bought links or mentions | Buying links for ranking is link spam | Spam policies |
| Cold emails promising page one | Be skeptical of SEOs who contact you out of the blue | Hiring guide |
Sources: Google Search Central, hiring guide and spam policies; Google Ads, advertiser guide; Google Maps, content policy. Checked October 12, 2026.
Certification itself is fine. Ask what a badge certifies: a Google Partner badge relates to advertising work, not organic SEO skill.
How do you score the answers?
Score each of the 12 answers from 0 to 2 and add them up. A total of 18 or more out of 24 marks a strong candidate. Any 0 on questions 6, 11 or 12 ends the process, because they cover spam risk, your accounts and your money. This is my own rule of thumb, not a published standard.
| Score | What the answer looked like |
|---|---|
| 2 | Specific, checkable, and backed by data or a document |
| 1 | Reasonable but vague, with nothing you can verify |
| 0 | Evasive, a guarantee, or a refusal |
If you would rather run these twelve questions on me, that is a fair test. I work as an SEO consultant in Dubai, and you deal with me from the first call to the monthly report.
You get the scope and price in writing before work starts, and reporting you can check in your own Search Console and GA4. Each change comes with a short note on why it matters. Most engagements open with a paid audit. If an agency would serve you better, I will tell you that on the first call.
Frequently asked questions
Can an SEO consultant guarantee first-page rankings in Dubai?
No. Google's hiring guidance states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, and it warns against anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. A consultant can commit to scope, method and reporting, so treat any ranking guarantee as a reason to walk away.
Should I hire a local SEO expert in Dubai or an overseas one?
Either can work, because Google's own interview questions test experience in your country or city, not the consultant's postcode. Ask both kinds of candidate how they handle Arabic and English content, Google Business Profile listings for each branch, and inquiries through WhatsApp.
Should I give an SEO consultant access to Google Search Console?
Yes, but give read-only access at the audit stage, as Google recommends, and keep owner access in your own name. When a provider leaves, remove their access and delete their unused ownership tokens, because a removed verified owner can re-verify while a token stays on the site.
Can an SEO consultant get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Nobody can promise that, but a consultant can make your pages clearer and earn genuine coverage, which shapes what AI tools find about you. As of August 2026, Google's spam policies treat attempts to manipulate generative AI responses as spam, so avoid anyone selling guaranteed AI mentions.
